Betrays where we have stepped
Autumn dew upon the leaves
As though where nature wept
For the passing of the warming sun
Bringing life to each new day
But summer’s gone, the cycle turns
Though we wish that it would stay
The leaves shine purple, red and gold
In autumn’s spectacular display
An ephemeral mosaic of shifting colour
Ahead of icy shades of grey
But buds already point to spring
A pledge that winter too will pass
And seeds, the promise of life to come
Glisten in autumn dew upon the grass
